No Formed Baikal Omul Fishing Areas Yet, Says Rosrybolovstvo
Rosrybolovstvo held a meeting with the government of the Irkutsk region to address this issue
Omul fishing on Lake Baikal has not yet begun due to the lack of designated fishing areas.
Representatives of Rosrybolovstvo, the Federal Agency for Fishery, held a meeting with the government of the Irkutsk region to discuss the issue. During the meeting, it was noted that the lack of designated fishing areas is due to the fact that the quotas for omul fishing have not yet been approved. The quotas are expected to be approved by the end of April.
In the meantime, Rosrybolovstvo has recommended that fishermen refrain from fishing for omul in Lake Baikal. The agency has also increased the number of patrols in the lake to prevent illegal fishing.
Omul is a valuable commercial fish that is found only in Lake Baikal. The fish is a delicacy and is highly prized by fishermen.
