Zenit Expresses Condolences Over Shklyarov's Passing
Zenit St. Petersburg has expressed its deepest condolences following the tragic passing of its former player, Alexey Shklyarov.
The 37-year-old defender died in a car accident on Sunday, January 15, 2023.
Shklyarov, a product of Zenit's youth academy, made his debut for the club in 2004 and went on to make over 100 appearances for the Russian giants.
He was part of Zenit's title-winning team in the 2007-08 season and also won the Russian Cup and Russian Super Cup during his time at the club.
After leaving Zenit in 2010, Shklyarov played for a number of other Russian clubs, including Terek Grozny, Rubin Kazan, and Krylya Sovetov Samara.
His last club was FC Akron Tolyatti in the Russian second division.
Zenit released a statement on its website expressing its condolences to Shklyarov's family and friends.
"The entire Zenit family is deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Alexey Shklyarov," the statement read.
"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."
Shklyarov's death has sent shockwaves through the Russian football community.
He was a well-respected and popular figure, and his passing will be mourned by many.
