Residents take protective measures as the city’s main river breaches the “dangerous mark” on its water level scale

Volgograd, Russia – Officials from the Ministry of Emergency Situations in Volgograd Oblast have elevated their flood alert status to “high” for the Volgograd Reservoir on the Volga River. According to measurements by the Russian Federal Water Resources Agency, the water level reached 3,960 cm at 8:00 am local time on Thursday, surpassing the “dangerous mark” of 3,690 cm. This level is the highest the city has seen since records began over 100 years ago.

In response, the municipal government has begun taking precautionary steps to protect residents from potential flooding. Emergency services have established 24-hour monitoring of the water level, with patrols operating along the riverbanks and evacuation routes being established in low-lying areas. Officials are urging citizens to stay informed about the situation and to follow instructions from authorities in case of an emergency.

The high water levels are primarily due to ongoing heavy rainfall in the Volga River basin and increased water discharged from the upstream Zhigulevsk Hydroelectric Station. Meteorologists have predicted that further precipitation is likely in the coming days, leading to additional concerns about the potential for flooding in Volgograd.

Meanwhile, residents are taking their own measures to protect their homes and businesses from the rising waters. Many have built sandbag barriers around their properties, while others have moved their belongings to higher ground. Shops and businesses along the riverfront have closed in anticipation of the flooding, and traffic restrictions have been implemented in affected areas.

The city government has set up a hotline for residents to report any emergencies or request assistance. Officials have emphasized that they are closely monitoring the situation and will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the public.
