Veteran Russian international Yuri Zhirkov has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.

The left-back, who played for PFC CSKA Moscow, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg and the Russia national team, made the announcement on his Instagram account on Thursday.

Zhirkov won the UEFA Cup twice with CSKA Moscow in 2005 and 2008, and also won the Russian Premier League and Russian Cup on three occasions each with Zenit.

He made 104 appearances for Russia, playing at Euro 2008 and 2012.

"It was a difficult decision, but I think it's the right time," Zhirkov said.

"I want to thank all my teammates, coaches and fans who have supported me throughout my career.

"I will always cherish the memories of playing for my country and winning trophies with my clubs."

Zhirkov's retirement brings to an end a glittering career that spanned over two decades.

He was one of the most decorated players in Russian football history, and his experience and leadership will be missed by the national team.
