Russia's Gabil Mamedov to Compete in New IBA Tournament
Russian boxer Gabil Mamedov has been confirmed to participate in the upcoming International Boxing Association (IBA) tournament.
Mamedov, a two-time European champion and 2019 World Championship bronze medalist, will compete in the men's 63.5 kg weight class.
The tournament, which will be held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia from March 13-20, will be the first major international boxing event since the IBA was suspended by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 2023.
The IBA was suspended by the IOC due to concerns over its governance, financial management, and refereeing and judging processes. The IOC has stated that the IBA must address these concerns before it can be reinstated.
Despite the IBA's suspension, the boxing tournament in Ulaanbaatar will still be recognized by the IBA and will offer world ranking points to the participating boxers.
Mamedov's participation in the tournament is a significant boost for the IBA, as it shows that the organization still has the support of some of the world's leading boxers.
It remains to be seen whether the IBA will be able to address the concerns of the IOC and be reinstated in time for the Paris 2024 Olympics. However, the tournament in Ulaanbaatar is a positive step for the IBA and for boxing as a whole.
