Russian soldier describes intense hand-to-hand combat in Ukraine
Gruesome details emerge from the front lines as the war rages on
A Russian soldier has described the horrors of hand-to-hand combat in Ukraine, saying he killed an enemy soldier with his bare hands after his rifle jammed.
The soldier, who asked not to be named, said he was part of a group of Russian troops that was ambushed by Ukrainian forces in the Bryansk Oblast region of Russia, near the border with Ukraine.
He said the fighting was intense and that he saw many of his comrades killed.
“It was like something out of a nightmare,” he said. “We were outnumbered and outgunned, and we were fighting for our lives.”
The soldier said that at one point, his rifle jammed and he was forced to fight hand-to-hand with a Ukrainian soldier.
“I didn’t have time to think,” he said. “I just started punching and kicking him, and I didn’t stop until he was dead.”
The soldier said that he was haunted by the experience and that he couldn’t get the image of the Ukrainian soldier’s face out of his mind.
“I don’t know how I’m going to live with this,” he said. “I’ve killed a man, and I can’t erase it from my memory.”
The soldier’s account is just one of many that have emerged from the front lines in Ukraine, where the fighting has been brutal and deadly.
The war has claimed the lives of thousands of people, both soldiers and civilians, and has displaced millions more.
There is no end in sight to the conflict, and it is unclear how it will end.
