Russia-Ukraine conflict: Brunei midfielder admits ignorance of Russian footballers
Despite close ties between the two nations, Faiq Bolkiah has little knowledge of Russian football.
The midfielder, who plays for Thai club Chonburi, said he was "not really familiar" with any Russian players.
His comments come amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with the conflict having a significant impact on the world of football.
FIFA and UEFA have suspended all Russian clubs and national teams from competition, while several high-profile players have spoken out against the invasion of Ukraine.
Bolkiah, who is the nephew of the Sultan of Brunei, said he was aware of the conflict but did not know much about Russian football.
"I'm not really familiar with any Russian players," he said. "I know that they have a good team, but I don't know much about them.
"I think it's a shame that they're not able to play in the World Cup, but I understand why they're not allowed to.
"It's a difficult situation, and I hope that it can be resolved soon."
Bolkiah's comments highlight the lack of awareness of Russian football in some parts of the world.
Despite close ties between Brunei and Russia, with the two countries having signed a number of agreements in recent years, it seems that football is not a major area of interest for many Bruneians.
However, Bolkiah's comments also show that the conflict in Ukraine is having a global impact, with even those who are not directly involved in the fighting being affected by the consequences.
It remains to be seen how the conflict will continue to impact the world of football, but it is clear that it is already having a significant effect.
