The Defense Ministry stated that the drones were launched from the territory of Ukraine. The ministry also claimed that the drones were carrying explosives and were intended to attack civilian infrastructure. No casualties or damage were reported in the attack.
The attack comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine. The two countries have been engaged in a military conflict since 2014, when Russia annexed the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.
The conflict has intensified in recent months, with both sides accusing each other of escalating tensions.
The drone attack on Astrakhan Oblast is the latest in a series of attacks that have targeted Russian territory in recent months. In April 2023, a drone attack targeted an oil depot in the Bryansk Oblast, causing a large fire.
In June 2023, a drone attack targeted a military airfield in the Kursk Oblast, damaging several aircraft.
