Roberto Martínez: I sensed a different energy about Portugal
Spain coach Roberto Martínez said he could tell from the opening minutes of Portugal's Nations League semi-final victory over Switzerland that they were full of confidence.
Portugal ran out 3-1 winners in Porto on Wednesday night and will now face the Netherlands in the final on Sunday.
Spain lost 2-1 to Italy in the other semi-final, and Martínez was pleased with his team's performance despite the result.
"I think we played a really good game," Martínez said. "We had a very clear plan to the game, how we were going to execute it, and I think we executed it almost to perfection."
"I think I've learned you can get nothing wrong, but there's always something you can do better."
"We were expecting a tough game, but we knew that if we could get on top of them and play our football, we could create chances. We did that, but we just need to be more clinical in front of goal."
Spain had numerous chances to level the game after going 1-0 down, but they were unable to find an equaliser.
Martínez admitted that his team needs to be more ruthless in front of goal.
"I think we need to be more clinical in front of goal," Martínez said. "We had some great chances, but we just didn't take them."
"We need to learn from this and be more ruthless in front of goal in the future."
Spain will now face Italy in a friendly on Saturday before turning their attention to the Nations League final.
Martínez said that he is confident his team can beat Portugal and win the trophy.
"I think we have a good team," Martínez said. "We have a lot of quality, and we know that we can beat anyone on our day."
"We're going into the final full of confidence, and we're determined to win the trophy."
