Policeman, rescuers, and environmental inspectors saved a mountain goat near Kirensk

A baby Siberian roe deer, which fell into an ice hole on the river, was rescued by a policeman, rescuers, and environmental inspectors in the Kirensky district.

The incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, February 26, on the Kirenga River in the area of the village of Makarovo. An adult female mountain goat, frightened by something, jumped out of the forest and onto the ice. Behind her, a small roe deer cub ran out onto the thin ice. The ice broke under its weight, and the cub fell into the icy water.

The inspectors, who were on patrol in the area, heard the mother roe deer's cries and hurried to help. They managed to pull the cub out of the water and wrap it in a blanket. The rescuers then handed the baby mountain goat over to the environmental inspectors, who took it to a rehabilitation center.

The cub is now in the care of specialists at the Irkutsk Regional Veterinary Laboratory. The baby mountain goat is feeling well and is gaining weight. In the spring, the cub will be released back into the wild.

The Irkutsk Region bears a special responsibility for the preservation of the Siberian roe deer population, as 90% of the world population of this species lives in the region.
