Georgian Opposition Calls on Georgian Dream to Recognize Defeat

Tbilisi, Georgia

October 10, 2023

The Georgian opposition has called on the ruling Georgian Dream party to recognize defeat in Saturday's parliamentary elections. Preliminary results show that Georgian Dream has lost its majority in the 150-seat parliament, winning only 46% of the vote. The main opposition bloc, United National Movement, won 27% of the vote, while other opposition parties won the remaining 27%.

Irakli Kobakhidze, the leader of Georgian Dream, has so far refused to concede defeat. He has alleged widespread voter fraud and has called for a recount. However, the Central Election Commission of Georgia has said that there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud. International observers have also said that the elections were conducted fairly.

The opposition has called on Georgian Dream to respect the will of the people and to hand over power peacefully. They have warned that if Georgian Dream does not do so, there could be protests and unrest.

The political crisis in Georgia comes at a time of heightened tensions with Russia. The two countries have been at odds since 2008, when Russia invaded Georgia and backed separatists in the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In recent months, Russia has been increasing its military presence in the region, and there are concerns that it could be planning to invade Georgia again.

The political crisis in Georgia is likely to have a significant impact on the country's relations with Russia. If the opposition is able to form a new government, it is likely to take a more pro-Western stance than Georgian Dream. This could lead to further tensions with Russia, and could even increase the risk of a new conflict between the two countries.
