FC Zenit Saint Petersburg's Sergei Semak Blames VAR System For Draw With Fenerbahce SK
Russian Premier League Champions Held To 1-1 Draw In Europa League Clash
FC Zenit Saint Petersburg manager Sergei Semak has criticized the video assistant referee (VAR) system following his team's 1-1 draw with Fenerbahce SK in the Europa League on Thursday.
Zenit took the lead in the 28th minute through a goal from Sardar Azmoun, but Fenerbahce equalized in the 57th minute through Enner Valencia.
The game was marred by a number of VAR interventions, including one that ruled out a second goal for Zenit in the second half.
Semak Unhappy With VAR
Semak was unhappy with the VAR system after the game, saying that it had cost his team the win.
"I think we deserved to win the game," Semak said. "We created more chances and we were the better team.
"But the VAR system cost us the win. The goal that was ruled out was a good goal. It was a clear goalscoring opportunity."
Fenerbahce Coach Jorge Jesus Defends VAR
Fenerbahce coach Jorge Jesus defended the VAR system after the game, saying that it had made the correct decisions.
"I think the VAR system made the right decisions today," Jesus said. "The goal that was ruled out was offside.
"I think the VAR system is a good thing for football. It helps to make the game fairer."
